He continued to build haciendas with the same philosophy as the O’Leary House. His second spec house in Kensington (the Captain and Mrs. William Lindstrom House, a National Historic Landmark, built subsequently afterward in 1933, also sold quickly with all its furnishings. Under a chandelier by Apparatus, the dining nook table is by Dos Gallos. The custom benches are outfitted in practical outdoor fabric by Thibaut (which is Greenguard certified). “Good Ancestor is based on the concept of seriously considering a future world, the generations we will never know, and acknowledging that we are all playing a role in shaping that future world,” she says. They partitioned off the original dining room and converted this into a tiny bedroom, barely enough space for two beds, a few drawers, and a desk for bookkeeping. Large front porches were also common.[2] These low slung, thick-walled, rustic working ranches were common in what would become the southwestern United States. Cliff May married his benefactor (and developer and real estate agent’s) daughter, Jean Lichty, and designed the first of five homes designed for himself and his growing family. The ranch-style house is noted for its long, close-to-the-ground profile, and wide open layout. While May never formally attended architecture school and could not draw well, in his early 20s, undaunted, he began designing and building houses in his hometown of San Diego. I like to think May had spent years specifying, studying, and sharpening the lived experience of his architectural plans, their relationship to nature, to Southern California, and to the inhabitants that called his designs home. In the rolling hills near Santa Ynez, Rita Chan—a sustainability-minded interior design firm based in Santa Barbara—created a warm, minimal “ranchette” that represents the best of wine-country living. Built in the early 1960s and recently given a contemporary makeover, the all-white structure is nestled amid a grassy parcel of land spanning almost three-quarters of an acre.
